Culinaria is an independent, not-for-profit organization, registered 501 c (3) tax-exempt organization, committed to promoting San Antonio as a premier food and wine destination, while fostering community growth and enrichment within the city we call home. For the past 19 years, Culinaria has been promoting locally sourced food and wine experiences in the San Antonio region through community events and culinary education opportunities, including Restaurant Weeks, a 5K run, a festival, and many others. Proceeds from events directly support culinary and education programs, enabling Culinaria to be a largely self-sustaining organization.
Inaugurated in July of 2000, Culinaria held an objective of promoting San Antonio as a culinary destination while promoting economic growth by assisting in filling hotel and lodging needs during the city’s slower time of the year. Formed by a core group of volunteers, Culinaria’s objective expanded to include education and cross-promotion through culinary talents globally. In October of 2000 Culinaria’s first festival was held, with a large expansion in 2010 following the festival’s move from November to May.
In August of 2010 San Antonio Restaurant Week was launched, sparking great interest from local restaurants as well as the community. The following year the first 5k Wine & Beer Run saw great success as part of the May festival at The Shops at La Cantera. The popularity of the 5k Wine & Beer Run proved to be another opportunity for a stand-alone event; in 2012 the race was moved to March and continues to serve as a signature event for Culinaria.
In January 2015, San Antonio Restaurant Week added a winter edition and currently, August and January offer two weeks of delicious dining. Additionally, restaurants credit San Antonio Restaurant Weeks with keeping their establishments busy during what would traditionally be a slow time for business. Working with Visit San Antonio and a talented group of communications leaders, Culinaria continues to promote San Antonio as a culinary destination.
Education of the students who seek the culinary and hospitality crafts is important to us. Whether it’s through our Endowment fund with the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management – San Antonio or through funds we give to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), we provide students with the means to attain the education necessary to pursue a career in the hospitality and culinary industries.
